Installed prices commonly land between $3 and $8 per square foot for a standard 2-3 inch residential mat over existing base. Rural work with long haul distances, steep grades or small square footage pushes higher because the crew mobilization is the same regardless of size. The price field here defaults to $5.50 and is fully editable.
Why is there a minimum charge on small driveways?
A paving crew, roller, and a truck of hot mix cost roughly the same to mobilize for 400 square feet as for 1,200. Many contractors set a job minimum around $2,500 to $4,000. If your calculated total falls below that, expect the quote to come in at the minimum rather than the per-foot math.
How much does removing an old driveway add?
Tear-out and disposal typically runs $1 to $3 per square foot depending on the existing thickness, whether there is concrete underneath, and local landfill or recycling tipping fees. Milling and reusing the material as base can cut that cost noticeably, so ask whether the contractor recycles on site.
Is base and gravel prep really necessary?
On a new driveway, yes. Asphalt is a flexible pavement and it is only as good as the compacted aggregate under it. Six to eight inches of compacted crushed stone is standard for cars, more for clay soils or truck traffic. Skipping base is the single most common reason a driveway cracks and ruts within a few years.
When should I sealcoat, and does it belong in this estimate?
New asphalt should cure six to twelve months before the first sealcoat, then be resealed every two to four years. It is included here as an optional line item because some contractors bundle a first seal and most do not. Priced separately, sealcoating usually runs $0.15 to $0.30 per square foot.
Does the season change the price?
Substantially. Hot mix plants close in cold months in northern climates, and late-season work carries a premium or is refused outright. Early spring and late fall bookings are often cheaper than peak summer, when crews are fully booked. Asphalt binder is also an oil product, so quotes move with crude prices.
