Gas Line Repair Cost Calculator

By the foot or by the fitting, with the permit and pressure test counted — because the inspection is the part you are buying.

If you smell gas, leave the building first and call your gas utility or emergency services from outside. Do not touch light switches. Utilities respond to suspected leaks without charging for the visit.

How this is calculated

work = length or count × rate
extras = permit + pressure test + trenching
+ opening and patching + reconnection
total  = (work + extras) × (1 + contingency%)

The per-foot rate covers pipe, fittings and the fitter’s time on the run itself. It does not cover getting to the run, and that is where quotes separate. A twenty-foot replacement in an open basement is close to the rate; the same twenty feet inside finished walls carries opening and patching that can exceed the piping. A buried run from the meter is priced by the trench more than by the pipe.

Permit and pressure test default to on because they are not optional extras in the way the others are. Gas piping is tested and inspected before it returns to service, and the inspection record is what a buyer, an insurer or the utility will ask for later. A quote that leaves them out is cheaper because it is smaller, not because it is better value.

Cost by job type

WorkRateTypical jobPipingWith permit and test
Leak repair at a fitting$450.00/repair1 repairs$450.00$1,035.00
Replace a section of pipe$22.00/ft20 linear ft$440.00$1,023.50
New run to an appliance$25.00/ft30 linear ft$750.00$1,380.00
Reroute an existing line$30.00/ft25 linear ft$750.00$1,380.00
Meter to house replacement$35.00/ft50 linear ft$1,750.00$3,910.00

Every figure runs through the same function as the calculator, with permit, pressure test and a 15% contingency, and trenching added only to the meter run. Compare the last two columns on the leak repair: the fixed permit and test roughly double a small job, which is why the per-foot rate is a poor guide to anything short.

Frequently asked questions

How much does gas line repair cost?

A leak repair at an accessible fitting typically runs $250 to $800. Replacing a section of pipe is more commonly $15 to $30 per linear foot plus the permit and pressure test, and a new run to an appliance lands between $500 and $2,000 depending on distance and how much wall or floor has to be opened. Buried runs from the meter cost most, because the price is trenching as much as pipe.

Do I smell gas — what should I do first?

Leave the building, do not touch light switches or anything else that could spark, and call your gas utility or emergency services from outside. Utilities respond to suspected leaks without charging for the visit and will shut off the supply. Cost is not the question at that point, and no calculator should be consulted before the building is empty.

Why does a permit matter for gas work?

Because the inspection is what verifies the repair. Gas piping is pressure tested and inspected before it goes back into service, and an unpermitted repair leaves you with no record that it passed, which surfaces later at a home sale or an insurance claim. Permit fees are small next to the work; the inspection is the part you are actually buying.

Can I repair a gas line myself?

In most US jurisdictions gas piping must be done by a licensed plumber or gas fitter, and many utilities will not restore service to unpermitted work. This is also the one trade on this site where the failure mode is an explosion rather than a leak into a basement. Treat it as licensed work regardless of what local rules technically allow.

Is black iron or CSST cheaper?

CSST — the flexible corrugated tubing — usually installs faster because it runs like wire through joists rather than being cut and threaded at every turn, so labor drops on long runs with bends. Black iron is cheaper as material and is still required or preferred in some situations. Which is allowed depends on local code and on bonding requirements, so it is a decision for the fitter, not for the budget.

How much does it cost to run gas to a new appliance?

Typically $500 to $2,000 for a run inside the house, driven mostly by distance from the existing line and by how much finished surface has to be opened and repaired. A range or dryer near an existing line is at the bottom of that; a fire pit or pool heater at the far end of a yard involves trenching and lands well above it. Budget the drywall and paint afterwards, which the gas quote will not include.

Results are planning estimates built from typical price ranges, not quotes. Gas piping must be installed and repaired by a licensed plumber or gas fitter in most jurisdictions, tested and inspected before it returns to service. If you suspect a leak, leave the building and call your gas utility or emergency services from outside before doing anything else.
