That is deliberate: a field replacement is quoted separately, sized by a perc test and sometimes designed by an engineer, so inflating a figure you typed from a real quote by fifteen percent would be inventing risk that the quote already priced. The contingency belongs to the digging around the tank, which is where surprises actually live.
Excavation is a separate field rather than folded into labor because it is the line that moves most with the site. A tank in an open yard with truck access is straightforward; the same tank behind a house, under a driveway or on a slope can double it, and no per-gallon rate captures that.

Every figure runs through the same function as the calculator. Read the first column against the second: the tank itself is around a fifth of the tank job, and the tank job in turn is around a third of a full replacement with a new field. Choosing a cheaper material moves the smallest of those three numbers, which is why material rarely deserves to be the deciding factor.

The first two rows are the ones worth reading twice. A backup immediately after pumping points at the tank or its inlet; a backup that comes back a few weeks later means the effluent has nowhere to go, which is the field. Getting that distinction right is a difference of tens of thousands of dollars, and it is answered by a pumping contractor before an installer is called.

How much does it cost to replace a septic tank?

Do I need to replace the drain field too?

But standing effluent, sewage backing up when the tank is empty, or lush green stripes over the field suggest the field itself has failed, and a new tank draining into a failed field solves nothing. Concrete, plastic or fiberglass?
Concrete is the traditional choice, heaviest, cheapest per gallon and the least likely to shift, but it needs a truck with reach and can crack over decades. Polyethylene and fiberglass are lighter, easier to place on awkward sites and immune to corrosion, but they can float in high water tables if not properly anchored. Site access and groundwater usually decide it more than price does.
What size tank do I need?
Sizing is normally by bedroom count rather than by people, since that is what codes use: 1,000 gallons for up to three bedrooms and 1,250 to 1,500 for four or five is a common baseline. Local health departments set their own minimums, and a garbage disposal or a large soaking tub can push the requirement up. The permit process will tell you the number that matters.
What is a perc test and do I need one?
A percolation test measures how fast the soil absorbs water, which determines whether a drain field will work and how large it must be. It is normally required for a new or replacement field rather than for a straight tank swap. Costs run a few hundred dollars, and a poor result can change the entire design — some sites need a mound or an engineered system that costs several times a conventional one.
How long does a septic tank last?
A concrete tank commonly lasts thirty to forty years and plastic or fiberglass can go longer, provided the system is pumped on schedule — every three to five years for most households. Most premature failures trace back to skipped pumping, which lets solids reach the drain field and destroys the expensive half of the system rather than the tank.
